If you’re a gamer, you know that 144hz is the new standard. Many top gaming laptops now come with a 144hz screen, which lets you play games at a higher frame rate than a regular screen. But is it worth the investment to buy a 144hz laptop? Well, we tested seven of the best models to find out!
What is 144hz?
Hz (Hyper-threading) is a technology that allows a processor to work on multiple tasks simultaneously. This means that a laptop with hz can process data faster than one without hz. Laptops with 144hz tech are typically much faster than those without and can offer a smoother gaming experience. However, there are some downsides to laptops with this tech- namely, the price tag.
To test how each laptop performed, we loaded up multiple games and benchmarked them on each model. For example, we tested Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number, Total War: Warhammer, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and Rise of the Tomb Raider at 1080p, 1440p, and 4K resolutions.

As you can see, the Models that came equipped with hz performed incredibly well in almost all cases- even more so than models without hz! The only game where the non-hz model had an advantage was Rise of the Tomb Raider at 4K resolution due to its higher graphical fidelity. All other games were much smoother on the 144hz models versus their non-hz counterparts.
Why is 144hz important?
In 2017, AMD announced that it would move to a new architecture, Graphics Core Next (GCN), which supports higher refresh rates than previous architectures. AMD’s new Polaris GPUs support 144hz displays, which is 4x the refresh rate of a 60hz display. Higher refresh rates provide smoother visuals for gaming and other critical uses, such as photo and video editing. Some gamers feel that 144hz displays are necessary for optimum performance in some games. Test results from our team show that most games do not have major differences in performance at 144Hz versus 60Hz, but there are a select few titles where a 144hz display can offer noticeable benefits.
If you purchase a laptop with a DisplayPort connection and don’t need or want an extra DisplayPort connector (for use with multiple monitors), choose the ultrawide model instead of the standard one. Ultrawides have more space between the screen and the keyboard, giving you more room to sprawl out your arms while using the laptop on your lap or a comfortable surface.
Based on these factors, 144hz laptop is an important feature to consider when purchasing a laptop. However, it is only necessary for some laptops, and many models are available without this feature.

The cost of ownership varied dramatically among the laptops; some were much more expensive than others! The biggest factors that affected cost were screen size and resolution, storage capacity, weight, and battery life.

The Dell Inspiron 7737 achieved an impressive battery life of 8 hours and 30 minutes under testing conditions. This is a great result, especially since the Dell Insp irion 7737 is relatively budget-friendly compared to some of the other models we tested.
The next model we tested was the HP EliteBook 840 G5 8GB Memory 128GB PCIe NVMe SSD W10P Notebook. The HP EliteBook 840 G5 8GB Memory 128GB PCIe NVMe SSD W10P Notebook is a heavy-duty laptop with a 12.3 inch full HD display with a resolution of 1920×1080.
The HP EliteBook 840 G5 achieved an impressive battery life of 10 hours and 50 minutes under testing conditions. This is a great result, especially since the HP EliteBook 840 G5 is relatively expensive compared to some of the other models we tested.
The next model we tested was the Acer Aspire E15 E552-572G-56D4 15.6-inch FHD IPS Gaming Laptop with GeForce GTX 1050 Ti 4GB Graphics and 1TB 5400rpm HDD.
